Typhoons Saola and Damrey in the western Pacific Ocean
Two typhoons in the western Pacific Ocean on 1 August, seen by MetOp-A.
The larger of the two storms, Saola had earlier caused widespread destruction in the Philippines (reportedly causing 29 deaths) and Taiwan (reportedly causing six deaths) while Damrey (top right) skirted southern Japan. Both were expected to make landfall over China.
