Storm batters parts of western Europe
An Atlantic storm, the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo, brought high winds and heavy rain to parts of Europe, including the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands on 21 and 22 October 2014. At least two people died in the UK after the first Atlantic storm of the autumn hit and gusts in excess of 113 km/h were recorded in a number of places. The gale force winds and heavy rain also caused travel disruption, with some train and ferry services being cancelled. In Ireland the maximum gust was 93 km/h at Casement Aerodrome near Dublin and in the Netherlands gusts of more than 100 km/h were recorded in Friesland. This ASCAT image shows the winds as seen by the MetOp satellites on 21 October. Yellow areas show average winds of about 70 km/h (Gale Force 8), orange 80 km/h (Strong Gale Force 9).
