Kiritimati (or Christmas) Island
SPOT 6 acquired this 1.5m resolution image of Kiritimati Island on 23 April 2017. Kiritimati Island is also known as Christmas Island and it is the world's largest coral atoll.
It is situated in the South Pacific Ocean in the Line Islands and is a part of the Republic of Kiribati. The word "Kiritimati" is of Kiribati origin and translates to "Christmas" in English. Kiritimati is well known for a number of sandy beaches, bone fishing, surfing and scuba diving. The island has a small population, of approximately 6000, who live in four villages across the island.
In the image we can clearly see part of the coral atoll which sits in the centre of Kiritimati and accompanying lagoons.
