Ilmen Lake, Russia
This SPOT-5 image, acquired on 08 April 2013, shows the frozen Ilmen Lake in the Novgorod Region of Russia.
The area of the lake within a year varies from 733 to 2090 sq.km. On this particular image the lake acreage is 1000 sq.km.
Fifty two rivers fall into Ilmen Lake and only one river - Volkhov - flows out of it.
The Veliky Novgorod city located on the Volkhov river bank can be seen in the upper left part of the image, which celebrated its 1150th anniversary in 2009. Today, over 200,000 people live in the city.
The Yuriev monastery - one of the most ancient monasteries in Russia - is situated not far from the Veliky Novgorod city near the Ilmen Lake. It was founded, according to legend, in 1030 by the Duke Yaroslav the Wise.
