Icelandic fissure
This MetOp image was acquired over Iceland on 03 September 2014, and shows lava and smoke erupting from the Bardarbunga Volcano. The recent seismic activity at Bardarbunga has been recorded since 16 August 2014, and has continued since then. Thousands of earthquakes, mostly small, have affected the area. Initial eruptions appeared to have occurred underground, but the activity increased and on 29 August an eruption of lava breached the surface at a fissure near the volcano. In the days since then the eruptions have continued. There were concerns over aviation hazards following the eruption on 29 August, with the Icelandic Met Office issuing a red alert for the threat posed from ash. But this was reduced on the next day, as little ash has been observed. As the eruptions continue, scientists have been continuing to monitor the activity on the ground, from the air, and by satellite in case it shows any sign of increased activity.
