Ice on Lake Erie, Ohio, USA
Frigid air descended across the Midwestern United States in mid-January 2015, triggering rapid freezing of Lake Erie.
This image from the Flock 1 constellation, acquired 10 January 2015, shows Eastlake, Ohio, where ice floes can be seen along the shoreline. Temperatures there measured about 5 °F (-15 °C). On land, plowed streets contrast sharply against snow-covered subdivisions.
Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and is the southern-most one. Half of the lake is located within Canada, and the other half the United States, within the bounds of four separate states.
It is the most shallow of the Great Lakes, and regularly freezes in wintry conditions. It is common for most of the lake to freeze over during winter.
