Flooding in Sri Lanka
This map, produced using Sentinel-1 data, shows satellite detected waters in Sri Lanka following flooding in December 2014. Sri Lanka was subjected to heavy rain in December, which caused floods that affected over a million people. The flooding also claimed 39 victims. The International Charter: Space and Major Disasters was activated to provide satellite imagery for response efforts on 29 December 2014. This map was produced for the Charter by UNOSAT, the rapid mapping service of UNITAR. Using Sentinel-1 data from 24 November and 18 December 2014 (before and during the flooding), it highlights areas of water detected by Sentinel's radar in the Ampara and Batticaloa Districts to analyse flooding.
